This position is located in our office in Ottawa, Ontario. Successful candidates will be required to report and work onsite from the Ottawa office at least two (2) days per week.

What you will do 

As a program officer, you will manage a range of programs in support of advanced research, research training and research dissemination. You will provide information and advice to client groups in relation to applications for institutional grants, special research fellowships, as well as doctoral and postdoctoral fellowships in relation to the review and assessment of applications and the awarding of fellowships, and in relation to award payments and post-award administration.  You will manage several selection committees by searching for and recommending scholars with appropriate expertise for service on selection committees and serving as committee secretary.

What you need to succeed

Education

  • A degree in any field from a recognized university, or an equivalent combination of education and professional experience related to the responsibilities of the position.
  • A degree in the social sciences and humanities from a recognized university (Asset).

Experience

  • *Sound research experience in a university, government, or similar setting, and/or *sound experience in the administration of research and/or award funding program 
  • Experience working in a client service environment
  • Experience in the identification and analysis of policy and procedural problems and issues
  • Experience in providing recommendations to management (Asset).  

*Sound is equivalent to one or more years of experience

 

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of the policies and practices governing the structure, management and operation of the grants and awards programs administered by SSHRC.
  • Understanding of the research process, research training and trends in the social sciences and humanities.
  • Understanding of the research community and of the structure of research funding in Canada.
  • Knowledge of graduate studies in Canada and abroad

  • Ability to plan, organize, manage, control and coordinate a high volume of diverse activities in accordance with policies and procedures, and under tight deadlines. 
  • Ability to identify problems, find solutions and assess their appropriateness to meet users’ requirements.
